Good morning race fans! It is here, the beginning of the 2018 IMSA season. And lucky for you, I’m here in the middle of it all in the quite beautiful (and much warmer than Detroit) Daytona Beach, FL. To kick off race weekend, I’m doing a special Daytona edition, with the qualifying results for the start of the Rolex 24 race tomorrow afternoon. And of course, a few other little updates to spare.
It’s about time we see some more series checkered flags waving. Race season has begun.
Yesterday the competing field for the Rolex 24 race on Saturday had qualifying, with the Prototype category ending with a surprising finish. For the last few minutes of qualifying, Helio Castroneves, IndyCar driver and now driver of the #7 Acura Team Penske DPi was holding fast to P1. However, with the last seconds of the clock going, the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac, with Renger van der Zande at the wheel stole the show and took the P1 finish from Penske. Granted, this is a 24-hour race and placement isn’t considered a determining factor in the endurance races, but it was quite a finish for the program. Here is a list of the top 5 qualifying spots for tomorrow.

If you’re not already following Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen on Instagram, you should be. This week he posted a picture of himself with a beautiful backdrop, followed with, “I am a wallpaper.” Who said the Finns had no humor?
Testing of the new 2018 aero kits, debuted last week at NAIAS, continue. So far, the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team, Carlin, and SPM are just a few of the teams that have been out for testing. Both Chevy and Honda are at the ready.
Of course, an update on #TeamIndyCar for episode 4 of The Amazing Race. Former IndyCar driver Conor Daly, and the 2016 Indy 500 Champion, Alexander Rossi took their first win in the first round of the two hour special on Wednesday. Daly had difficulties in the second round with the mechanics behind a catapult that almost resulted in a last place finish and elimination. However, they pulled it together ending the episode and round in 5th. They continue on! But for how much longer? You’ll have to tune in next week.
Don’t fret as Formula E returns next weekend in Chile. In the meantime, you can watch the Rolex 24-hour race to fill your racing needs. Championship leader Felix Rosenqvist (grabbing a second win in Morocco last week) will be there as one of the pilots for the #37 Jackie Chan DCR JOTA ORECA LMP2 in the Prototype category.
